Good-Bye Oliver
"I'm kind of sad," Tetty says, taking a break from texting. I give her my best look of confusion. "Oliver is gone, he's leaving."
"You know," I answer. "I don't feel sad exactly. Maybe…jealous?"
Tetty returns the look of confusion. I explain.
"Well, he's gone out on his own and made friends, had adventures. Tonight there's a cake with his image on it and countless postcards circulating with his picture. A volunteer even told me that they had bought 'Oliver' brand wine."
"So? You made him. You're the artist."
"Well, I kind of feel like he could have called or something. Said thank you at least."
We watch a volunteer pick up the painting and bring it to the front of the room as Oliver's new owner, the winner of the silent auction, is announced. The four of us cheer. I'm not clear on why.
"OK, let's go!" Tetty announces placing her phone in her oversized but stylish red purse.
I think back on some of my character: Fran, Sal, Maximus, Timmy, and now Needle Teeth. What are they up to now? What do they see everyday? Have they moved? Are they being well cared for?
