Statement of Purpose

I make art about fear, loss, and isolation. Recently, I've begun drawing imaginary, children's stuffed animals which combine a carnal pathos with a distinctly human vulnerability. My interest in these subjects stems from my need to resolve my father's death with my desire to now have children of my own. The handmade, tactile quality inherent in my style tells the story of my process and connects my work in a historical sense with large format, children's picture books. A teacher, I am precise with each drawing, employing the rules of perspective and zoology research, to render these creatures correctly as they would exist. The observant outsider, I question the line between normalcy and disaster and I gain from my art an outlet to express my sexuality, anxiety, and growth as a woman.

Biography

Rebecca grew up in the tiny rural town of Belvidere, Vermont, population 200. She attended the one room school house, rode her horse over the covered bridges in the summer and shoveled snow in the winter. Growing up in this small working class town allowed a large degree of freedom not only from adult supervision but also from the many social pressures peers experienced. As a small child, there was no pressure to have the “right shoes” or to neatly fit gender rolls. It was in this environment, with a willing following of siblings and the occasional neighbor kid that the many adventures of monsters, aliens, spaceships, magical horses, and faraway lands began.

The monsters of her current work explore the themes of body image, extraordinary (but perhaps not useful) abilities, and of course isolation. She suggests that like all art, these are by their very nature autobiographical. However, they also reflect issues within the culture she is surrounded by.

She currently lives in a classic Victorian house in a respectably working class neighborhood (there are still a few left!) in San Francisco with her fabulous roommates and two cats and teaches drawing at the Academy of Art University.
